As an LA commuter, it is no surprise that I am a self-confessed podcast addict. With so many different options, it’s easy to make a playlist of all your current events, beauty, wellness, fitness, and even cold-case news all in one spot. While not a requirement, I listen to my podcast episodes at 1.5x speed and it is a game changer.
BREAKING BEAUTY
Run by longtime Canadian Beauty Editors Jill and Carlene, their podcast often features interviews with some amazing people. My favorite is their episode with Dr. Jean Carruthers – also known as the pioneer of my beloved botox. If you want to learn more about botox in general, a badass woman Dr cementing her career in 1970s Canada, and all around innovative intellectual – then this is the episode for you.
SCIENCE VS
This podcast is exactly as it sounds. Self-described to “take on fads, trends, and the opinionated mob to find out what’s fact, what’s not, and what’s somewhere in between,” I love how they are able to dissect a number of topics and present sound support for their conclusions. I particularly love their episodes on Vaccinations and Immigration, which happen to be incredibly relevant considering the recent Measles outbreak in Seattle/Portland and the current US administration. Spoiler (to hopefully none of you), vaccines are beneficial, anti-vaxxers aren’t, and immigration is typically a long term boon to the economy, how shocking*.
*re: not shocking in the slightest.
WORK PARTY
“You don’t have to have the answer, you just have to know how to ask a question. Always ask someone who knows.”
Brought to you by the CEO of Create & Cultivate, Jaclyn Johnson, the podcast is very focused on discussing issues near and dear to the modern woman. As someone who regularly fangirls over Kristin Bell, I honestly didn’t think she could say anything that would make me like her more. And then, I listened to her interview. It’s a captivating discussion touching on anxiety, social corporate good, the deathbed test, and human growth. While I don’t want to summarize the whole episode, there were so many things I agreed with. Like when she mentioned that for-profit + for-good companies are the future of this planet (enter her project This Bar Saves Lives). Honestly, I keep re-listening to this episode over and over because it is just so inspiring.
“The things you want for yourself, you have an obligation to want those for other people.”
THE SKINNY CONFIDENTIAL
This Boss(tick) babe has really worked hard at building her brand which has expanded from blog to podcast to media company. She routinely interviews some amazing people across beauty, wellness, nutrition, fitness, and business.
As a skincare junkie myself, I absolutely LOVED her interviews with
I also really enjoyed her interview with Tanya Zuckerbrot. She has a masters degree in nutrition from NYU and a lot of the research she speaks on really hit home with what I anecdotally notice to work well for me when I feel my healthiest. Plus I’m a long time lover of Scandinavian crackers so this just cemented them as a staple in my pantry.
FUNERAL STORIES
This podcast is near and dear to my heart as it is co-run by one of my favorite people and dear friend, Casey Maleno (she’s a fucking hoot and a god damn gem of a human). Episodes dive right into the nitty-gritty details of death and the surrounding stories. Also co-hosted by Laura who has worked in the funeral industry for years, you get a full sided look at dealing with grief, the process of saying goodbye, and those occasionally hilarious or touching moments that come from it all. I don’t have a favorite episode, but honestly you can’t go wrong with any of them.
NO SUCH THING AS A FISH
From the fact-checkers of the popular British game show QI, the hosts come together and present their favorite facts that they come across each week. No particular favorite episodes, but the humor (puns in particular) is great no matter which one you pick.
FULL COVERAGE
Also hosted by a pair of witty Brits, Full Coverage is one of my favorite beauty focused podcasts available. Now based out of LA, Harriet and Lindsey hit all the hot gossip surrounding new beauty launches, cult followings of “HG” products, and have some pretty rad interviewees every so often. The highlight of the week is pretty much my favorite part of each episode – and yes if you’re familiar with the show, I did say that in tune in my head.
JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE
My first exposure to Joe Rogan was when he co-hosted the Man Show on Comedy Central and then later as the host of Fear Factor… so how surprised was I when I stumbled across his podcast where he routinely interviews some of the most intelligent people I’ve heard of. We’re talking tenured research-driven biologists, neurologists, economists, leading fitness experts, and wellness gurus. My favorite episodes have been with Gary Taubes speaking about sugar, and any of the ones with Dr Rhonda Patrick. Seriously, every time she’s on I listen with a notepad and have to tap back repeatedly because the information is that good and insightful.
TIM FERRISS SHOW
Similar in vain to JRE, Tim interviews a lot of leading experts in their fields as well as public figures. While there are many episodes of his that I love centering around science and health, my absolute favorite was his interview with Terry Crews. His story of personal growth and maturing into a well-rounded man after growing up in an abusive household, and his career transition as a professional NFL player into acting. He really seems to have a healthy grasp on overcoming toxic masculinity and it gave me so much more respect for the man as a human and not just his talent.
ON THE MEDIA
An hour long, weekly NPR series, On The Media touches on current hot topics surrounding journalism, tech, and politics. Pretty much a focus on whatever the hot topic surrounding American Politics is that week from a pretty transparent point of view.
While subscribing to the above keeps me pretty busy, I’m always looking for fun new podcasts. Are there any you’ve been enjoying lately?
