I got a few kits from Makeover Essentials for Christmas. First impression? I really loved how travel friendly these pallets were. They securely closed, had brushes included, weren’t overly bulky, and the colors were fairly all-purpose.
First up, The Kabuki Brush seen on the left. It came in the cute little pouch behind it, and I do love the idea of being able to contain it so that if there is any residue left on the brush, that it won’t get all over the rest of your bag. The bristles were also dense and stiff enough to be able to really buff in product. However, it wasn’t that soft and the bristles had a more blunt edge than I’m used to. I’d say stick to the Sephora Classic Collection as it’s around the same price point, but overall a better brush in my opinion.
The Simply There Lip Eye Color Kit has three eye shadows and three lip colors. Swatches below:
The eyeshadow swatches aren’t very pigmented, but I was also using their included applicators. I was able to get a lot more out of these using proper eye makeup brushes. I really like how blendable the smokey color was, and the other two shades are great for highlighting your inner eyes. However, I really wish they had done away with the lightest lip color and included an eyeshadow that was between the black and the medium brown since I just feel that it’s hard to do a decent smokey eye when the colors seem to be at the opposite ends of the spectrum. I do really like the lip color on the far right though. It was really creamy and stayed put well enough.
The Mystic Eyes Kit has two cream liners, and six eye shadows. Swatches below:
Once again I wasn’t too impressed with the included brush. I did like that this one was dual ended so that one sided was a fine liner and the other was a shadow brush, however the bristles were a little too giving and didn’t pick up that much color. Using the pallet with my brushes was much easier and yielded better results. I actually really liked the cream liners, with an angled brush it was really easy to apply to the lash line and do a cat eye. Wear wise, I’d say it lasts better than the Sephora Gel Pot, but not as long as the Inglot one.
I like the range of eye shadows except for the green, just because it feels a little random to be included. But it’s much easier to do a smokey eye with this pallet than the eyes and lips one.
The baby doll color kit comes with a peachy blush, 2 light colored eyeshadow, and 4 lip colors. The lip colors on the left being a bit glossy, and the ones on the right being a bit creamy. Swatches:
The fallout on the blush is a little crazy, using a decent brush it wasn’t too bad, but just swirling my Real Techniques Blush Brush got blush all over the rest of the pallet and in the glosses… Out of all the pallets, the powders in this one are my favorite. The eye shadows are similar enough in range that they complement each other as a base/highlight, and the blush is a nice peachy shade that complements most complexions.
Overall, I think these kits/pallets offer some great all in one options if you need something more portable. Makeover Essentials seems like a decent brand, I’m not sure I’d ever rave about these products, but I definitely don’t dislike them. I do love how large the compact mirrors are, so it does make it easier to apply on the go. Though I would recommend investing in some decent brushes other than the included ones to get the most out of them.
