I’m not going to lie, when I first took these out of the box and plugged them in, I was afraid I’d gotten a defective set. There is in fact a light that should indicate something, but it doesn’t turn on. Tried a different outlet, still no dice. I was in the middle of reading through the instruction sheet to see if the light was supposed to turn on when it was just plugged in, or when the rollers were ready to use, when my nose caught the most awful smell of burning plastic.
That was it, I had finally set fire to the house. Shit. In a sheer panic I rushed into the bathroom, painfully stubbing my toe on the door frame, further uttering another slew of profanities.
The good news is that there were no fires, I was not going to be homeless, and that awful smell was probably just some sort of factory residue being heated/burnt off. Or just the smell of the silicone being reheated for the first time since they were molded. The nice thing is that each successive time I’ve used them, the smell has gradually gotten better (or my sense of smell is becoming increasingly worse). I’m glad to mention that there haven’t been anymore stubbed toes either.
As for the light issue, internet searches yielded that the light not working seemed to be a common occurance.
Despite the rocky start, these rollers have really grown on me. I have always been a big fan of hot rolllers though. I kid you not, during the entire time I was at university, I would pop some rollers in my hair right before I walked out the door in the morning. By the time I parked on campus, my hair was set. Pop the rollers out, fluff hair, admire fabulous curls and head to class. It didn’t matter that I’d have another 12 hours of classes/work, I’d managed an extra 10 minutes of sleep and my curls looked amazing all day. #NoShame. You can’t do that with a curling iron.
One of my favorite things about these are that you don’t need to pin or clip them up. You simply wind your hair around the base and close it to keep it in place. Plus I’m quite fond of not burning my fingers trying to hold a roller up while I frantically search for the clip. It’s the little things. The ease of use completely makes up for how not compact the whole set up is. Cause boy does it take some room up under the sink.
The other benefit of no clips, is that they don’t leave any creases at the base of the curl, or cause your hair to sit in any wonky directions.
Apparently there are two different sizes of rollers. I did not notice this at first, and so now mine are all mixed together. There are six 3/4″ ones, and six 1″ ones. I normally pop these in randomly anway, so it doesn’t make much difference to me. But if you’re used to sizes being color coded you might want to mark the tops with nail polish or something to make it a bit easier.
Since the silicone has such a smooth finish, I definitely recommend adding some texturizing spray or waiting for second day hair for them to stay in and set a little bit better. I also feel that since I’m pointing out the demerits of these a lot I may be giving off the wrong impression. I like to think of these rollers as your socially awkward best friend. The one who makes a horrible first impression, has a bunch or weird quirks, but once you get past those – their endearing qualities really shine through. These rollers are definitely not perfect, and require a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of them, they are pretty wonderful.
You can find the Infiniti Pro Secret Curl Hotcurls here. What about you, do you think you get better curls with a curling iron/wand, or hot rollers?
