Last month I spent quite a bit of time on the East Coast, which was incredibly fun despite the hours spent up in the air and stuck waiting for delayed flights. I thought I’d switch things up a little bit this month and instead of doing beauty favorites, share some of the things I’ve been enjoying outside of makeup.
READ
A while back I had heard of Oyster, which is essentially like Netflix but for books. It’s similar that there are a bunch of books available to read, but not all of them are covered by the subscription. While it normally costs around $10/month, I saw a promo on Facebook to try it out for three months for only $1. Having the subscription has prompted me to read more just from the convenience – plus it was a perfect complement to the hours I spent traveling this past month. So far I’ve read the sequel to The Shining, a couple books on blogging, and I’m currently working my way through a book about mixology and the science of booze called Proof which is super interesting. I’m not sure if I’ll continue my subscription after the trial period – I probably would if it were only $4-5 a month, but $10 seems a little steep. Until then I’m going to read as many books as I can power through. Overall I think it’s a great service and love how it syncs up between my laptop/phone/ipad, plus they have a bunch of great recommendation lists.
LISTEN
More than half way through the year and the first album that I’ve actually bought (as opposed to one-off songs) has been the new release from Highly Suspect, Mister Asylum. I heard their single Lydia on the Slacker Radio app I use, and I seriously just can’t stop listening to it.
GO
.
Last week I spent some more time in Brooklyn, specifically the Williamsburg area. The area reminds me a lot of Portland, but just with way more going on. In fact, the coffee shop I hunkered down in actually served Stumptown Coffee, which is a company based in Portland. You can take the girl out of Portland, but it felt more like hanging out with Portland’s cooler older brother. I feel totally at home in the area and loved walking around exploring. Some pretty exciting things happened during that visit – which I hope to share with you guys in a later post! Stay tuned.
WATCH
Alan Tudyk is by far one of my favorite actors. I mean, Death At A Funeral (the original British one), and Firefly? How could he not be, seriously funny dude. Tucker & Dale Vs Evil is definitely one of those Cult B movies, but is an underrated hidden gem of a film if you’re into dry circumstantial humor. Ultimately Tucker & Dale are fixing up their cabin in the woods, while some college kids camping mistake them as hillbilly murderers – hysterics ensue.
On the complete other end of the spectrum, I have really been getting back into House Of Cards. I love the level of intensity and plot layers in the show, but it definitely makes it one of those shows you have to watch actively and pay attention to. Claire and Francis are pretty much the epitome of the power couple that I love to hate and hate to love. It’s probably the first political show I’ve gotten into since watching The West Wing…
CONSUME
Add another Brooklyn throwback. While I was spending some quality time with my cousin last week, she turned me onto the food blog Studio Snacks. Even though there was a bit of a mishap in following the instructions on our Pork Fried Caulirice due to reader error, the meal itself was super delicious and easy to throw together.
With the heat (and humidity) I’ve been (not) enjoying lately, there is nothing quite as refreshing in the morning as a nice cold brew coffee with some almond milk. Plus it’s super easy to make at home if you have a french press (see here).
