I’ll admit, the lob bob being on trend initially inspired me to take the chop. It was fun for a while. Even though I immediately missed my longer hair, I decided to stick with it for a bit longer. I would grow it out over the winter months. But then it wasn’t growing fast enough. I get regular trims, and it just felt like all progress I made was routinely snipped off every 10-12 weeks when I got my roots touched up.
Then came the youtube binges. I kid you not I watched clip-in hair extension reviews & how-tos for an hour and 45 minutes straight one night. I had a problem. That problem was short hair.
Now let me make this clear. The following – I wouldn’t say rant, maybe negative exasperation? – is in no way aimed at the fine folks at LivingSocial. If anything, it’s proven to me that they have great customer service and really friendly staff. This is more about if something seems too good to be true, then that’s probably the case. Getting excited about things that are super unlikely to live up to expectations is frustrating. You get disappointed, and also irritated at yourself for getting that excited in the first place.
As it initially took the extensions so long to arrive (ordered: April 30th, arrived: June 2nd), I called LivingSocial to ask what the deal was. The customer service lady I talked to was super nice, very understanding, and ended up crediting my account. However, by the time I got the extensions and realized I not only received the wrong color based on what the picture showed, but that the hair was probably not remy like had been stated, the original deal had been taken down. Bummer. No double checking descriptions/fact checking.
Honestly, what was I going to do with bright white hair extensions? A wig, sure, I’d totally find something for that, or at least pass it along to my friends who do cosplay. But clip-in wefts? So I thought I’d go ahead and try dying them. Enter box dye from Garnier.
I dutifully mixed the developer and the color, laid down some foil, and slathered away. Once I was sure that all the wefts had been thoroughly coated, I covered them with saran wrap so the dye wouldn’t dry out on me. I not so patiently waited the allotted time for the color to develop. Tested a patch. Then waited even longer.
It’s safe to say that the experiment was a bust. When I washed out the dye it hadn’t taken anywhere (not even the teensiest bit except for the thread connecting the hair to the wefts). These obviously were all synthetic. Double bummer. Just as white as when I started.
In a good dose of denial and procrastination from other obligations, I gave the box dye route another go. Sup’ sub $2 clearance option.
Yep, the cheaper/darker dye was not effective either. I mean, I didn’t expect it to anyway, but I was hoping. Now I need to find out an alternative use for these hair wefts. Attach to friend’s dog and film a vine? Burn as kindling (just kidding that’d smell awful). Use as a poorly designed mop? The possibilities are endless, well, except for actually using as viable hair extensions…
Moral of the story: if you really really want hair extensions, your best bet is to purchase them from a reliable source. One that will not only color match you before ordering, but that also has some sort of return policy, or guarantee of quality. I’ve watched good youtube reviews of Halo, Foxy Locks, or Bellami.
LivingSocial? Still awesome. Cheap hair extensions? Shell out for the good ones.
Have you guys ever used hair extensions? If so, which brand and how did you like them?
